Observations on the vegetation of northeastern Mato Grosso - II. Forests and soils of the Rio Suiá—Missu area

Abstract: The vegetation of the well drained soils along the Suiá─Missu road in the Serra do Roncador region of NE Mato Grosso is Evergreen Seasonal forest of Amazonian type. The area lies close to the meeting place of the Amazonian forest (the hylaea) and the cerrado (savanna) formation of Central Brazil. The structure of the forest is simple: the canopy is at about 18−23 m, and is exceeded by a few scattered emergents; no recognizable strata can be distinguished among the understorey trees and the shrub and herb layer… Show more

“…The Suia´-Missu region has a seasonally tropical climate, with a dry period from May to October and a rain period from November to April. The local climate is classified according to Ko¨ppen as a savanna subtype (Aw), with microregions of monsoon (Am) and tropical rain (A) subtypes (Ratter et al, 1978;Pell et al, 2007). Average annual precipitation is 1370 mm and the temperature varies between 17.0 and 32.7 xC (Marimon et al, 2006).…”

“…Transitional seasonally dry evergreen forests form a complex mosaical belt along this arc between taller, more humid forests to the north and west and drier woodland savannas -the cerrado -to the south and east (Ratter et al, 1973;Eiten, 1975;Ratter et al, 1978). Within this belt, dry forests and cerrado interdigitate at fine spatial scales depending on topography, drainage, soil water and nutrient status, and patterns of dry season fire (Coutinho, 1982;Ratter, 1992;Klink et al, 1993).…”
