A topografia do ambiente, intimamente relacionada com a dinâmica de ondas de maré e tempestades, com aporte de areia oriunda dos ventos e das marés e com a ação antrópica, não influencia a distribuição das espécies vegetais encontradas, sendo considerada apenas como um componente influente na paisagem, estabelecido em conjunto com a comunidade vegetal, sendo esta última fortemente determinada pela distância em que se encontra em relação ao mar. Palavras-chave: fitossociologia, dunas, restinga, comunidades vegetais, topografiaABSTRACT -(Composition and distribution of herbaceous vegetation in three areas of different aspect in Praia do Peró, Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil). The composition and the distribution of herbaceous vegetation of Praia do Peró were characterized in three areas with different topographic and aspect, by using the method of quadrats. The three areas are occupied by the creeping-psamophyte community, being visually divided into two regions: frontal, with stolonipherae and succulent species, and posterior, with predominance of grass species. Thirty-eight species were sampled, from which Paspalum maritimum Trim, Ipomoea imperati (Vahl.) Griseb, Ipomoea pes-caprae (L.) Sweet, Sporobolus virginicus (L.) Kunth and Panicum racemosum (Beauv.) Spreng. attained the highest values of importance (VI). The topography, intimately related with the dynamics of tidal waves and storms, with the deposit of sand brought by the winds and tides, and with the human action, doesn't influence the distribution of the vegetal species found, being considered only as a component that influences the landscape, established together with the vegetal community, being the latter strongly determined by the distance of the sea.

Factors which affect the vegetation of strandlines on sandy shores were investigated with particular attention to the growth of four annual species A triplex glabriuscula, A triplex laciniata, Cakile maritima and Salsola kali which are widely distributed around the coasts of North-West Europe. The response of these species to increases in salinity and sand accretion are reported from laboratory experiments. Field observations were also made of photosynthesis and the availability of, and the response to, nitrogen. The results are used to discuss the adaptation of these plants to growth on strandlines in an attempt to explain their restriction to this habitat.

/ The microclimate of beach and foredune areas of North Padre Island along the mid-Texas coast was found to be greatly modified by vehicular and pedestrian traffic during investigations made from late fall to early summer 1973-74. The primary effect of human activity on microclimate was expressed as reduced cover and species diversity of the vegetation. As the intensity of human activity increased, elevation, especially of areas near the beach, was decreased, whereas average wind velocities near the ground surface, evaporation, atmospheric salinity near the ground surface, wind-carried sand particles near the ground surface, soil salinity, soil pH, average soil temperature and range in temperature, soil bulk density, and soil-water contents were increased.The economic value of barrier islands such as Padre Island as recreational areas and as physical protection for adjacent inland areas from storm surges may total millions of dollars annually (Bur. Econ. Geol. 1972). Human impact on these valuable islands should be evaluated before long-term recommendations are formulated for their use. Human activity can adversely affect vegetation of barrier islands (McAtee and Drawe 1980). Destruction of vegetation on these fragile areas can modify the microclimate to such an extent that reestablishment of vegetation and subsequent stabilization of the area may be precluded (Odum 1959). The effects of vehicular and pedestrian traffic on microclimate of coastal ecosystems have been investigated by a number of workers (Lutz 1945, Lull 1959, Reaves and Cooper 1960, Arndt and Rose 1966, Hill and Summer 1967, Kramer 1969, Goldsmith et al. 1970, Chappell et al. 1971, Grable 197 l, Kemper et al. 1971, Warkentin 1971, Liddle and Greig-Smith 1975, Brodhead and Godfrey 1977.This study was designed to evaluate the effects of vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the foredune and beach microclimate of North Padre Island, Texas.
