Observations on the occurrence ofHeterakis gallinarumin laying hens kept on soil

Abstract: The occurrence of Heterakis gallinarum infection in a flock of Rhode Island Red laying hens is described. These hens were entirely kept in houses on a farm for commercial egg production, where a deep litter production system was adopted. Faecal samples from 120 hens selected at random were examined by common flotation technique and modified McMaster's technique. H. gallinarum eggs were detected in 50% of the examined samples with very low faecal egg counts (<50 eggs per gram of faeces). There was no evidence o… Show more

“…In recent years, an increasing prevalence of roundworms, especially in litter-based housing systems, associated with increased exposure to parasites with a fecal-oral route of transmission has been reported (Stafford et al, 2011;Höglund & Jansson, 2011;Jansson et al, 2010;Papini & Cacciuttolo, 2008). Strategies to deworming are being introduced in the avian production systems with the limitation that FLBZ is currently the only anthelmintic licensed to be used in poultry.…”

“…Aviary and deep-litter systems with or without access to a free-range area are increasingly used in European egg production units. This production system has the advantage to promote natural behaviour and increase animal welfare with the inconvenient that a increased exposure to helminth parasites with a fecal-oral route of transmission has been reported (Papini and Cacciuttolo, 2008;Jansson et al 2010;Höglund and Jansson, 2011;Kaufmann et al 2011) Among the poultry helminths, Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum are the most common species (Permin et al 1999). They can cause weight depression (Kilpinen et al 2005) and damage the intestinal mucosa, sometimes leading to haemorrhages, anaemia and severe diarrhoea.…”

“…6 This nematode also plays a role in histomoniasis (black head disease) epidemiology in turkeys where it causes severe disease and high mortality, sometimes up to 100% of a flock. 7,8 Ascaridia galli causes ascaridiosis with reduced feed conversion and mortality in birds.…”
