“…From this result, it can be speculated that the females of C. Chrysemys picta (Cagle, 1954;Wilbur, 1975;MacCulloch and Secoy, 1983), Clemmys guttata (Ernst, 1976), and Mauremys japonica (Yabe, 1989).…”

“…Sex was determined by examining the position of the cloaca relative to the margin of the carapace by stretching the tail straight back. Turtles with the cloacal opening beyond the posterior margin of carapace were judged to be males, and those with the cloacal opening within the margin of the carapace, females (Cagle, 1954), but the tails of juvenile turtles could not be extended to determine sex in many cases.…”

“…The curved carapace length (CCL; mm) and sex of captured western painted turtles were recorded for all captured turtles. The CCL was measured with a flexible metal measuring tape and the sex of each turtle determined by observation of secondary sexual characteristics including foreclaw length and precloacal tail length (Cagle 1954;Gibbons 1968;Ernst 1971a;Gibbons & Lovich 1990;Mitchell 1994;Rowe 1997). Sex of western painted turtles <10 cm CCL is difficult to differentiate using secondary sexual characteristics; therefore, they were classified as undetermined.…”
