“…Consistent with observations in mouse [36], sheep [18,45], and human [14], OPN mRNA levels are highest during the secretory phase, corresponding to the time of epithelial differentiation under the influence of progesterone. As demonstrated in the human [46], progesterone is essential for successful pregnancy in the rabbit [47]. Further, the rabbit uterus has been shown to be receptive to embryo attachment 5-7 d postovulation [48].…”

“…In the rat indomethacin can completely inhibit implant¬ ation (Kennedy, 1977), but in rabbits there is only a reduction in implantation sites and live fetuses (Hoffman, 1978). However implantation in the rabbit can occur in the absence of oestrogen (Wu & Allen, 1959;Pickworth & Lamming, 1967), and oestrone and oestradiol levels do not change between ovulation and implantation but remain at low levels (Challis et al 1973;Spilman, Shaikh & Harper, 1978;Harper et al 1979). This is not true for rats (Canivenc et al 1956;Psychoyos, 1960;Shaikh, 1971), and hence an action of indomethacin on implantation mediated by the steroid hormone receptors in this latter species may be possible.…”

“…The ovary is the main secretory source of progestin and estrogen and is indispensable to maintenance of pregnancy throughout gestation in many mammals, including cows (Estergreen et al 1967), goats (Meites et al 1951), dogs (Verstegen-Onclin & Verstegen 2008), and/or rabbits (Pickworth & Lamming 1967). On the other hand, an ovariectomy at mid-pregnancy or the later trimester of pregnancy does not disrupt the process of pregnancy in several mammals, including humans (Csapo et al 1972), monkeys (Albrecht et al 2000), guinea pigs (Bland & Donovan 1969), and/or mares (Hinrichs et al 1987), whose progestin and estrogen are supplied by other tissues such as the placenta.…”
