“…The resolution, illustrated in Figure 7 of Osterbrock & Flather (1959), was to posit that the ionized gas was contained in clouds occupying a small fraction of the nebular volume. This same approach, using density-sensitive infrared lines of SIII was used by Herter et al (1982) to reach similar conclusions about the H ii regions G75.84+0.4 and W3 IRS 1. We were unable to find suitable measurements of the OII 3729/3726 doublet in the Rosette Nebula, so an estimate of f in this way could not be done.…”

“…In astrophysics, transitions from metastable levels of highly ionized atoms are observed in emission in low-density media. It is well known that line intensities and ratios provide excellent diagnostics for temperature and density and consequently for elemental abundances (Feldman 1981;Herter et al 1982). In the laboratory, the np k configurations of medium-Z elements have attracted considerable attention in recent years as spectroscopic diagnostics in Tokamak plasmas.…”

“…The derived B || values in the nebula for f = 1 are listed in Table 2 and vary from +1 to +5 μG. If we consider a filling factor f = 0.1 (Herter et al 1982;Kassim et al 1989), the values increase by a factor of 3.2, varying between +3 and +16 μG. These results are in the range of the B || values measured in the diffuse ISM (Crutcher 2012).…”
