The existence of the hidden curriculum has been documented in educational literature for a number of decades. This concept largely refers to unintended learning occurring alongside that which is intended and formally delivered. Since the 1990s, a body of literature has evolved examining the hidden curriculum in the education of health professionals, particularly in the disciplines of nursing and medicine. Much of this has examined how the hidden curriculum operates in professional socialization and values development in practice-based settings. This chapter examines this body of literature and explores the concept of the hidden curriculum, along with its potential benefits and challenges.
