Observations of the Blazar 3c 66a With the Magic Telescopes in Stereoscopic Mode

Abstract: We report new observations of the intermediate-frequency peaked BL Lacertae object 3C 66A with the MAGIC telescopes. The data sample we use were taken in 2009 December and 2010 January, and comprises 2.3 hr of good quality data in stereoscopic mode. In this period, we find a significant signal from the direction of the blazar 3C 66A. The new MAGIC stereoscopic system is shown to play an essential role for the separation between 3C 66A and the nearby radio galaxy 3C 66B, which is at a distance of only 6 . The d… Show more

“…Furthermore, discoveries of γ-ray from distant blazars (e.g., [26,27,28]) support the EBL specific intensity level derived from galaxy count and recent EBL models [7,9,12]. As discussed the VHE recovered spectra of blazars up to ∼ 10 TeV are dominated by statistical and systematic uncertainties in the observations rather than EBL modelling.…”

“…[12]) satisfy the condition that the intrinsic spectrum corrected by the attenuation derived with our EBL model 4 has Γ int ≥ 1.5. We consider the following blazars: 3C 66A at z = 0.444 observed by MAGIC [26], 3C 279 at z = 0.536 observed by MAGIC in the 2007 observational campaign [27], and the discovery of PKS 1222+216 in the VHE regime [28], the second most distant flat-spectrum radio quasar known (z = 0.432). These three blazars are plotted in Fig.…”

“…In discussing photon/ALP conversion in IGMFs, it is also necessary to consider the important role of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL), its main effect being an additional attenuation of the photon flux (especially at energies above about 100 GeV). Recent gamma-ray observations already pose substantial challenges to the conventional models that explain the observed source spectra in terms of EBL attenuation [144,145,146,147,148].…”
