Observations of Intermittent Structures in the Periphery of a Cylindrical Linear Plasma in PANTA

Abstract: Intermittent pulse events have been observed in the periphery of the linear cylindrical plasmas produced in Plasma Assembly for Nonlinear Turbulence Analysis (PANTA). A novel combination of 32 azimuthal and 3 radial probes enables us to obtain 32 × 3 = 96 pairs of correlations simultaneously. The two-dimensional (2D) correlation analysis shows that the intermittent structure is well correlated with quasi-periodic bursts inside the plasma, and it reveals that the intermittent pulse is caused by the passage of a… Show more

“…Blobs or intermittent radial transport in PISCES-A, 12,13) NAGDIS-II, 14,15) ULS, 16) LAPD, 17) and TPD-Sheet IV 18) emerged on the surface of cylindrical plasma with arc discharge sources. Similar phenomena were also observed in RF plasma sources, PANTA, 19) VINETA 20,21) and in the loss-cone of the GAMMA10/PDX mirror machine. 22) Early stages of these are reviewed in Ref.…”

“…It should be noted that the density modulation plays a fundamental role in driving the streamer structure. 31 The radial distribution of the ion saturation current is measured with a radially scannable fivechannel radial rake probe installed at z ¼ 1.375 m. 32 The radial rake probe has a spacing of Dr ¼ 1 cm. In a series of two discharges with 0.5 cm radial displacement of the rake probe position, the radial range from r ¼ 2 cm to r ¼ 6.5 cm is measured with a radial resolution of Dr ¼ 0:5 cm.…”

“…The probe tips measure the ion saturation current and the floating potential alternately, although only the ion saturation current data is analyzed in the article. The radial profile of the ion saturation current is measured with a 5-channel radial rake probe installed at z = 1.625 m [28]. The radial rake probe covers from r = 2 cm to r = 6 cm with a spacing of Δr = 1 cm.…”
