Observations of circumstellar disks in scattered light with SPHERE at the VLT

Exoplanetary science is a very active field of astronomy nowadays, with questions still opened such as how planetary systems form and evolve (occurrence, process), why such a diversity of exoplanets is observed (mass, radius, orbital parameters, temperature, composition), and what are the interactions between planets, circumstellar disk and their host star. Several complementary methods are used for the detection of exoplanets. Among these, imaging aims at the direct detection of the light reflected, scattered or emitted by exoplanets and circumstellar disks. This allows their spectral and polarimetric characterization. Such imaging remains challenging because of the large luminosity ratio (10 4 -10 10 ) and the small angular separation (fraction of an arcsecond) between the star and its environment. Over the past two decades, numerous techniques, including coronagraphy, have been developed to make exoplanet imaging a reality.This paper gives a broad overview of the subsystems that make up a coronagraphic instrument for imaging exoplanetary systems. It is especially intended for non-specialists or newcomers in the field. We explain the principle of coronagraphy and propose a formalism to understand their behavior. We discuss the impact of wavefront aberrations on the performance of coronagraphs and how they induce stellar speckles in the scientific image. Finally, we present instrumental and signal processing techniques used for on-sky minimization or a posteriori calibration of these speckles in order to improve the performance of coronagraphs.Résumé. L'exoplanétologie est un domaine très actif de l'astronomie moderne avec des questions encore ouvertes : comment les systèmes planétaires se forment-ils et évoluent-ils ; pourquoi une telle diversité d'exoplanètes est-elle observée (masse, rayon, paramètres orbitaux, température, composition) ; quelles sont les interactions entre les planètes, les disques circumstellaires et leur étoile hôte ? Plusieurs méthodes complémentaires sont utilisées pour la détection d'exoplanètes. Parmi celles-ci, l'imagerie permet la détection directe de la lumière réfléchie, diffusée ou émise par les exoplanètes et les disques circumstellaires. Ceci permet une caractérisation spectrale et polarimétrique. Obtenir une image d'exoplanète n'est cependant pas simple en raison du grand rapport de luminosité (10 4 -10 10 ) et de la faible séparation angulaire (fraction de seconde d'angle) entre l'étoile et son environnement. Depuis deux décennies, de nombreuses techniques, dont la coronographie, ont été développées pour faire de l'imagerie des exoplanètes une réalité.

Up to now and probably for still a long time, the only support of information used to detect exoplanets has been the analysis of light, either visible or infrared. In the vast majority of cases it is the light from a star and not the light from the planet itself which is used, because the huge contrast in brightness between the star and a planet orbiting it as well as the extremely short angular distance between them makes direct imaging a real challenge. It is then a subtle effect detected on the starlight that in general indicates the planet's presence and provides information on some of its characteristics: mass, radius, distance to the star, temperature, etc. As an introduction to the different contributions appearing in this volume, this article proposes a kind of brief review of the various methods imagined by astronomers to exploit one of the properties of the light to succeed in detecting and characterizing exoplanets. We'll show that even direct detection became a reality and contributes to the more than 5000 exoplanets detected today.Résumé. Jusqu'à présent et probablement pour encore longtemps, le seul support d'information utilisé pour détecter les exoplanètes est l'analyse de la lumière, qu'elle soit visible ou infrarouge. Dans la grande majorité des cas, c'est la lumière d'une étoile et non celle de la planète elle-même qui est utilisée, car l'énorme contraste de luminosité entre l'étoile et une planète en orbite autour d'elle ainsi que la distance angulaire extrêmement courte qui les sépare font de l'imagerie directe un véritable défi. C'est alors un effet subtil détecté sur la lumière de l'étoile qui indique en général la présence de la planète et fournit des informations sur certaines de ses caractéristiques : masse, rayon, distance à l'étoile, température, etc. En guise d'introduction aux différentes contributions figurant dans ce volume, cet article propose une sorte de brève revue des différentes méthodes imaginées par les astronomes pour exploiter une des propriétés de la lumière afin de parvenir à détecter et caractériser des exoplanètes. Nous montrerons que même la détection directe est devenue une réalité et contribue aux plus de 5000 exoplanètes détectées aujourd'hui.

Direct imaging of exoplanets: Legacy and prospects

Understanding how giant and terrestrial planets form and evolve, what is their internal structure and that of their atmosphere, represents one of the major challenges of modern astronomy, which is directly connected to the ultimate search for life at the horizon 2030-2050. However, several astrophysical (understanding of the formation and physics of giant and terrestrial exoplanets), biological (identification of the best biomarkers) and technological (technical innovations for the new generations of telescopes and instruments) obstacles must be overcome. From the astrophysical point of view, it is indeed crucial to understand the mechanisms of formation and evolution of giant planets, including planet and disk interactions, which will completely sculpt the planetary architectures and thus dominate the formation of terrestrial planets, especially in regions around the host star capable of supporting life. It is also important to develop dedicated instrumentation and techniques to study in their totality the population of giant and terrestrial planets, but also to reveal in the near future the first biological markers of life in the atmospheres of terrestrial planets. In that perspective, direct imaging from ground-based observatories or in space is playing a central role in concert with other observing techniques. In this paper, I will briefly review the genesis of this observing technique, the main instrumental innovation and challenges, stellar targets and surveys, to then present the main results obtained so far about the physics and the mechanisms of formation and evolution of young giant planets and planetary system architectures. I will then present the exciting perspectives offered by the upcoming generation of planet imagers about to come online, particularly on the future extremely large telescopes. On the timescale of a human Life, we may well be witnessing the first discovery of an exoplanet and the first detection of indices of life in the atmosphere of a nearby exo-Earth! Résumé. Comprendre comment les planètes géantes et terrestres se forment et évoluent, quelle est leur structure interne et celle de leur atmosphère, représente l'un des défis majeurs de l'astronomie moderne, qui est directement lié à la recherche ultime de la vie à l'horizon 2030-2050. Cependant, plusieurs obstacles astrophysiques (compréhension de la formation et de la physique des exoplanètes géantes et terrestres), biologiques (identification des meilleurs biomarqueurs) et technologiques (innovations techniques pour les nouvelles générations de télescopes et d'instruments) doivent être surmontés. Du point de vue astrophysique, il est en effet crucial de comprendre les mécanismes de formation et d'évolution des planètes géantes, y compris les interactions entre la planète et le disque, qui vont complètement sculpter les architectures planétaires et ainsi dominer la formation de planètes terrestres, notamment dans les régions autour de l'étoile hôte capables d'accueillir la vie.
