Observational signatures of past mass-exchange episodes in massive binaries: The case of HD 149 404

Abstract: Context. Mass and momentum exchanges in close massive binaries play an important role in their evolution, and produce several observational signatures such as asynchronous rotation and altered chemical compositions, that remain after the stars detach again. Aims. We investigated these effects for the detached massive O-star binary HD 149 404 (O7.5 If + ON9.7 I, P = 9.81 days), which is thought to have experienced a past episode of case A Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF). Methods. Using phase-resolved spectroscopy, w… Show more

“…We adopted a volume filling factor at terminal velocity of 0.1 and a clumping velocity factor of 100 km s −1 ; for the clumping formalism implemented in CMFGEN, see e.g. Raucq et al (2016). The following elements are included in the calculations of our models: H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Ca, Fe, and Ni.…”

“…Typical errors on T eff and log g were assumed to be 1500 K and 0.15 dex, respectively, as generally adopted in CMFGEN analyses in the literature (Martins et al 2015b;Raucq et al 2016). These values are higher than those considered for DE-TAIL/SURFACE since stronger winds have an impact on the resultant spectrum, making the analysis more challenging.…”

“…A recent, more detailed study further reveals an asynchronous rotation of the two stars, a significant nitrogen overabundance of the secondary star, and peculiar positions of the stars in the HR diagram (Raucq et al 2016). All of these properties clearly disagree with expectations of single star evolutionary models, yielding further support to the past mass-exchange scenario (Raucq et al 2016). …”

“…Spectral disentangling can only reconstruct features that are well sampled by the Doppler excursions during the orbital cycle. In practice, this often leads to artifacts in the wings of broad lines, such as the H i Balmer lines, if these lines only partially deblend over the orbital cycle (e.g., Raucq et al 2016). However, in the case of HD 152 248, the RV amplitudes are sufficient to ensure a reliable reconstruction of the wings of the Balmer absorption lines.…”
