Abstract. We aim to test the plausibility of a theoretical framework in which the gamma-ray emission detected from supernova remnants may be of hadronic origin, i.e., due to the decay of neutral pions produced in nuclear collisions involving relativistic nuclei. In particular, we investigate the effects induced by magnetic field amplification on the expected particle spectra, outlining a phenomenological scenario consistent with both the underlying Physics and the larger and larger amount of observational data provided by the present generation of gamma experiments, which seem to indicate rather steep spectra for the accelerated particles. In addition, in order to study to study how pre-supernova winds might affect the expected emission in this class of sources, the time-dependent gamma-ray luminosity of a remnant with a massive progenitor is worked out. Solid points and limitations of the proposed scenario are finally discussed in a critical way.

The theoretical fundamentals of formation of the supernova remnant (SNR) continuum radio spectra are presented in this review. Mainly based on the Fermi 1 theory - also known as diffuse shock acceleration (DSA) - the different shapes (linear or curved in log-log scale) of SNR radio spectra are predicted for both young and evolved SNRs. On the other hand, some particular forms of spectra of older SNRs can be predicted by including the additional processes such as Fermi 2 acceleration mechanism or thermal bremsstrahlung radiation. Also, all of these theoretically predicted forms of radio spectra are compared with real spectra obtained from observations. Finally this review can represent some kind of "atlas" with initial patterns for the different kinds of SNR radio spectra - it should be helpful for radio astronomers in their interpretation of the observed radio spectra.Comment: accepted in Ap&S

“…To complement the work of Sezer et al (2011), similarities of CTB 37A with other SNRs cannot be overlooked. Referring to Green et al (1997), which summarises SNRs with detected associated OH maser emission, and cross-checking these with SNR catalogues (Guseinov et al 2003(Guseinov et al , 2004a, a short list of OH maser-associated SNRs with estimated ages can be compiled: W28 (∼10 4 yr), W44 (∼10 4 yr), W51c (∼10 4 yr), IC 443 (∼10 3 yr), CTB 33 ( 10 5 yr) and G347+0.2 (∼10 3 yr). Of these, the first 4 SNRs have diameters of ∼15-35 pc, similar to CTB 37A which has dimensions of ∼0.12 • ×0.23 • and an average diameter of ∼24±5 pc at a distance of 7.9±1.6.…”

Observations of dense molecular gas towards the supernova remnants CTB 37A (G348.5+0.1) and G348.5−0.0 were carried out using the Mopra and Nanten2 radio telescopes. We present CO(2-1) and CS(1-0) emission maps of a region encompassing the CTB 37A TeV gamma-ray emission, HESS J1714−385, revealing regions of dense gas within associated molecular clouds. Some gas displays good overlap with gammaray emission, consistent with hadronic gamma-ray emission scenarios. Masses of gas towards the HESS J1714−385 TeV gamma-ray emission region were estimated, and were of the order of 10 3 -10 4 M ⊙ . In the case of a purely hadronic origin for the gamma ray emission, the cosmic ray flux enhancement is ∼80-1100 times the local solar value. This enhancement factor and other considerations allow a discussion of the age of CTB 37A, which is consistent with ∼10 4 yr.
