Observation of whispering gallery modes from hexagonal ZnO microdisks using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy

Abstract: Zinc oxide hexagonal microdisks with diameters ranging from 3 μm up to 15 μm were fabricated by thermal chemical vapour deposition. Optical characterisation of ZnO microdisks was performed using low temperature (80 K) cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging and spectroscopy. The microdisks exhibited green luminescence locally distributed near the hexagonal boundary of the ZnO microdisks. High resolution CL spectra of the ZnO microdisks revealed whispering gallery modes (WGMs) emission. The experimentally observed WGM… Show more

“…In addition, ZnO is very suitable for photonic applications, as it has a wide, direct bandgap (3.4 eV) and a large number of intrinsic defects and impurities that emit from the ultraviolet to the near infrared 14,15 . Finally, photonic elements including microdisk cavities 11,16,17 can be easily fabricated from this material. Therefore, there is an urgency to understand and…”

“…Some of local polarizationdependent experiments show that the WGMs are preferentially TM polarized, since detecting TE polarization causes an almost complete suppression of WGMs modulations. However, other works investigated that the WGMs observed from the ZnO microdisks were mostly TE polarized [85,87]. Figure 6D shows the dependence of the WGMs on the size of the ZnO wires.…”

“…where R is the radius of outer circle of the resonator, N is the resonance interference order, β = n −1 for TM polarization and β = n for TE polarization [85,86]. Figure 6A shows a spatially resolved cathodoluminescence (CL) spectrum from an individual ZnO nanonail head with a side length of 794 nm.…”

“…Most demonstrations of WGM cathodoluminescence images have been demonstrated with wide band gap materials such as GaN [12] and ZnO [13] while recourse to HCL remains anecdotal [5]. Conversely, recent results using scanning near-field microscopy on InP-based microdisks [14] demonstrate the vivid interest in imaging WGMs at the sub-wavelength resolution.…”
