Observation of Two Time Scales in the Ferromagnetic ManganiteLa1xCaxMnO

Abstract: We report new zero-field muon spin relaxation and neutron spin echo measurements in ferromagnetic (FM) (La,Ca)MnO3 which suggest at least two spatially separated regions possessing very different Mn-ion spin dynamics. One region displays diffusive relaxation, "critical slowing down" near T(C) and an increasing volume fraction below T(C), suggesting overdamped FM spin waves below T(C). The second region possesses more slowly fluctuating spins, a linewidth independent of q, and a decreasing volume fraction below… Show more

“…4,5,6,7 As a consequence, the majority of works, early focused around the optimum doping level for TC of x∼3/8, are now moving toward x∼1/2, where the competition between these phases can be better studied. 8,9,10 At the 1:1 Mn 3+ :Mn 4+ composition, charge ordering (CO), that inhibits the electron transfer associated with Double Exchange-Ferromagnetism (DE-FM) in manganites 11 , is particularly feasible, leading to a rich variety of charge/orbital ordered (CO/OO) structures.…”

“…The muon sensitivity to short-range order and other forms of disordered magnetism (cluster-glass, spin-glass) has been used to study the magnetic inhomogeneities at low temperature in systems such as CeCu 2 37 among others. In these examples, the different spin dynamics (namely multiple spin fluctuation rates) detected by the analysis of the μSR spectra are a signature of heterogeneous magnetic phases, including ordered clusters within the paramagnetic regime.…”

“…3 Last decade, the formation of inhomogeneous states, referred as phase separation, was discovered in doped La 1-x (Ca,Sr) x MnO 3 manganites. There was observed with muon spin relaxation measurements, 4 Mössbauer spectroscopy 5 and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) 6 that ferromagnetic phase is inhomogeneous and decomposes into at least two ferromagnetic phases. The phases are characterized by different DE interaction, magnetic Zeeman splitting, rate of hopping of electron holes among the Mn 3þ /Mn 4þ sites, etc.…”
