Observation of tropospheric δD by IASI over western Siberia: comparison with a general circulation model

Abstract: Abstract. This study presents the joint H 2 16 O and HDO retrieval from Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) spectra over western Siberia. IASI is an instrument on board the MetOp-A European satellite. The global coverage of the instrument and the good signal-to-noise ratio allow us to provide information on δD over this remote region. We show that IASI measurements may be used to estimate integrated δD between the surface and 3 km altitude or from 1 to 5 km depending on the thermal contrast, wi… Show more

“…This is consistent with the summer dry bias of LMDZ discussed earlier. A dry bias was also noticed in the free troposphere compared to the IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) data (Pommier et al, 2014). The daily model-data correlation for q is better in winter and rises to 0.94.…”

“…They introduced an a posteriori method to reduce the cross dependence of retrieved δD on atmospheric humidity and to assure similar AKs for humidity and δD. The ratio of water vapor isotopologues is much smaller than the variability of humidity, and the a posteriori data treatment reduces the risk of misinterpreting the remote sensing data (Schneider et al, 2012;Pommier et al, 2014;Wiegele et al, 2014). Similar AKs guarantee that the retrieved isotopologue ratio and humidity are sensitive to the same atmospheric air mass, and the cross dependence of atmospheric humidity on the retrieved δD is significantly reduced (see the appendix for details of the AK computation results).…”

“…Steinwagner et al, 2007;Payne et al, 2007;Lossow et al, 2011). Most recently, middle tropospheric δD products applying the operational meteorological satellite sensor IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) have been presented by Schneider and Hase (2011a), Lacour et al (2012), and Pommier et al (2014).…”

“…This is done with great similarity to the characterisation of the MUSICA NDACC/FTIR product as presented in Schneider et al (2012), to which we refer throughout this section as S12. Very recently Pommier et al (2014) used the S12 formalism for assessing uncertainties in the IASI water isotopologue product as provided by the Université libre de Bruxelles.…”
