Observation of Synchrotron Radiation from Electrons Accelerated in a Petawatt-Laser-Generated Plasma Cavity

Abstract: The dynamics of plasma electrons in the focus of a petawatt laser beam are studied via measurements of their x-ray synchrotron radiation. With increasing laser intensity, a forward directed beam of x-rays extending to 50 keV is observed. The measured x-rays are well described in the synchrotron asymptotic limit of electrons oscillating in a plasma channel. The critical energy of the measured synchrotron spectrum is found to scale as the maxwellian temperature of the simultaneously measured electron spectra. At… Show more

“…Figure 5(d) shows the X-ray beam distribution produced in a capillary tube of length 20 mm and diameter 200 µm, n e = 7 × 10 18 cm −3 , and a different set of filters (a base of 6 µm mylar and 3 µm Al, with a 3 µm thick vertical stripe of Al and a 3 µm thick horizontal stripe of Sn). Assuming a synchrotron-like spectrum, using the tabulated transmission data of the filters and known CCD sensitivity, an estimate of the critical energy E c = 1.3 keV was deduced using a leastsquares method [15].…”
