Observation of Rotated-Oriented Attachment during the Growth of Ag2S Nanorods under Mediation of Protein

Abstract: In this study, protein-conjugated Ag2S nanorods were prepared in aqueous solution, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) was used to track the whole process of the nanorod growth. Our results showed that the final products were formed via two-step oriented attachment, that is, particle-particle and rod-rod oriented. More interestingly, before oriented attachment, the nanoparticles or nanorods attached without sharing the same lattice plane; they could then rotate to a perfect array and f… Show more

“…Singh et al have prepared protein capped Ag [20,21], Au [20], Pt [21], Ag-Au [20], Ag-Pt [21] nanomaterials in aqueous BSA foam and study their cytocompatibility against human gingival fibroblasts. Yang et al have successfully fabricated BSA-ponjugated Ag 2 S Nanorods [22,23] and HgS nanoparticles [24], and discussed their formation mechanism. Our group firstly reported a simple, environment-friendly, controllable synthetic method of CuSe nanosnakes at room temperature using BSA as foaming agent [25].…”

“…The attachment is thermodynamically favoured on the facet containing the largest number of dangling bonds which leads to the removal of surface energy which is kinetically favoured at the nanoscale. 17 The formation of nanowires (aspect ratio > 10) and nanorods (aspect ratio < 10) from oriented attachment of pseudo-spherical nanocrystals has been observed in a wide range of semiconductor nanocrystals including II-VI [18][19][20][21][22] ,V-VI 23,24 , IV-VI [25][26][27] and I-VI 28 systems. In general, the attaching nanoparticles must be ligand free on the joining facet, for attachment to occur and several reports demonstrate 2 oriented attachment only after selective removal of surfactant capping ligands.…”

“…The experimental lattice fringe spacing, 0.146 nm, is consistent with the interplanar spacing in monoclinic Cu 2 Se. The connected nanoparticles were rotated to find the common crystallographic orientation (indicated by the white arrow) [27]. After the rotations were finished, they fused to form almost a perfect short nanorod (Fig.…”

“…The basic principle is attributed to that whose structure decides whose function. BSA has reversible conformational isomerization in different pH condition, when pH value is lower than 4.7, BSA undergoes another expansion with a loss of the intra-domain helices (10) of domain I which is connected to helix (1) of domain II and that of helix (10) of domain II connected to helix (1) of domain III [27,28] Then, BSA has three reversible forms: N forms, F forms, and E forms, which could bind with CuSe nanoparticles, finally result in the formation of different shapes of CuSe nanostructures, for example, CuSe nanoparticles bound with N forms formed the sphere nanostructures, CuSe nanoparticles bound with F forms formed the cubic nanostrctures, and CuSe nanoparticles bound with E forms formed the nanosnakes, final CuSe nanostrcutures strongly depend on the structures of BSA proteins under the reaction condition.…”
