Insulating polymers are promising components for constructing high performance organic solar cells (OSCs) due to their advantages including low cost, excellent mechanical properties, and feasibility in morphology modulation. However, few studies have been conducted on the effect of molecular weight of insulating polymers on the performance of the corresponding OSCs. In this work, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) with different molecular weight (named as PMMAL and PMMAH) are incorporated into a range of polymer:nonfullerene photovoltaic systems. It is found that although both PMMAL and PMMAH can suppress the energetic disorder and the nonradiative energy loss, and lead to enhanced open‐circuit voltage in their corresponding OSCs, distinct mechanical property, operational stability as well as photovoltaic performance are observed. PMMAL can modulate the molecular packing of the host components more effectively due to its superior chain segment mobility during the film‐forming process, which can drive the host components to form more ordered molecular packing and therefore superior photovoltaic performance. On the other hand, due to the better miscibility of PMMAH with the host system, especially the C5‐16 acceptor, PMMAH can be well dispersed in the host and form a stable framework that provides superior mechanical properties and operational stability.

In the advancement of organic photovoltaics (OPV) toward scale‐up production, how to mitigate the batch instability of electron‐donating polymers originated from varied molecular weights remains a great challenge. By taking into consideration the relationship between the molecular weight of electron‐donating polymers and the relevant critical concentration (c*) of the solution, herein it is demonstrated that the aggregation behavior of the electron‐donating polymers can be tailored through manipulating c* of the polymer solution. It is interesting to note that the excessive aggregation in low‐molecular‐weight fractions can be circumvented while the favorable mixing ratio can be identified. By preparing the binary bulk heterojunction film under c*‐defined conditions for mixed‐molecular‐weight polymers, a notable power conversion efficiency of 19.1% for binary devices is achieved. Of particular importance is that a linear interrelation can be established between the c* for the maximum PCE and c* for the low‐molecular‐weight fraction aggregation, validating those straightforward spectra measurements can accurately and rationally guide the molecular weight mixing of photovoltaic donor polymers, thereby fully harnessing the potent driving force and affinity inherent to the low‐molecular‐weight fractions. These findings offer a straightforward and logical framework for addressing batch variability in the large‐scale production of high‐performance OPV devices.

Comprehensive SummaryThe stability of organic radicals in ambient condition is important for their practical application. During the development of organic radical chemistry, the electron‐withdrawing and steric hindrance groups are usually introduced to improve the stability of radicals via reducing the reactivity of radicals with oxygen in air. Herein, the electron‐withdrawing carbonyl groups are introduced to construct a planar aromatic oxalic acid radical (IDF‐O8) with two‐dimensional electron spin pan structure. Interestingly, IDF‐O8 exhibited a low optical bandgap of 0.91 eV in film, however, the multiple quinone resonance structures between electron‐withdrawing ketone and phenol radicals contribute to the high stability of open‐shell radical IDF‐O8 without protection of large steric hindrance groups. Under the irradiation of 808 nm (1.2 W·cm–2), IDF‐O8 reaches 147 °C in powder state. This work provides an efficient synthesis route for the open‐shell electron spin pan system, which is different from the famous fullerene, carbon nanotube and graphene. The electron spin pan can be extended to spin tube or spin sphere system based on the design strategy of aromatic inorganic acid radicals in future.
