Observation of converted Moho reflections in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula

Abstract: Converted Moho phases are observed in several seismic refraction records in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The converted Moho waves have amplitudes as large as subcritical PMP and SMS at some offsets. The amplitude analysis of the converted Moho waves indicates that they comprise predominantly P-to4 reflections (PMS) rather than S-to-P (SMP). Synthetic seismograms have been computed to study the influence of different values of Poisson's ratio in the uppermost mantle on the amplitude of converted Moho… Show more

“…Investigations of velocity transitions at the Moho and at various depths in the mantle are an active area of research in seismology (Neves et al . 1996; Tellez & Cordoba 1996). There is never an assumption in such studies that they can help model the detailed structure at any depth.…”

“…Forward solutions for analytical pro¢les of velocity transitions are relevant to the study of transition zones at various depths in the Earth.
