Observation of Coherent Transients in Ultrashort Chirped Excitation of an Undamped Two-Level System

Abstract: The effects of Coherent excitation of a two level system with a linearly chirped pulse are studied theoretically and experimentally (in Rb (5s -5p)) in the low field regime. The Coherent Transients are measured directly on the excited state population on an ultrashort time scale. A sharp step corresponds to the passage through resonance. It is followed by oscillations resulting from interferences between off-resonant and resonant contributions. We finally show the equivalence between this experiment and Fresne… Show more

“…In C 2 H 2 , the E valence state lifetime is significantly longer than the Rydberg state lifetime, confirming the results deduced from spectroscopy on H photofragments. 2,3,22 In the C 2 D 2 spectra the intensity distribution of the exciting pulse accounts for the intensities of the two features. An interesting result is the significant difference in the decay times observed in C 2 D 2 : the excitation of the cis mode seems to lead to a faster predissociation dynamics than the excitation of the trans mode.…”

“…In the case of excitation at 1 , the chirp of the pump pulse would be mainly visible through the rising edge of the pump-probe signal effectively prolonging the time during which the laser frequency is resonant. 22,23 In the case of two excited states ͑at 2 ), a chirp will also cause the two states to be excited at different times since the pump frequency is in resonance with the two states at different times within the pulse. The Wigner representation of the 2 pump laser field is plotted in Fig.…”

“…In the context of weak-field excitation induced by an ultra-short chirped laser pulse in a two-level system [Zam01] coherent transients could be observed directly in an experiment. Here, most of the population transfer occurs when the frequency is resonant with the atomic transition.…”

“…Note that the transient dynamics induced by the spectral phase optimization exhibit strong oscillations in the excited state population, which differ from the case of constant spectral phase. Oscillatory dynamics of the excited state population in the perturbative regime of the interaction have been observed experimentally by linearly chirping the spectral phase of a laser pulse [36].…”
