Observation of a transient magnetization plateau in a quantum antiferromagnet on the Kagomé lattice

Abstract: The magnetization process of an S = 1 2 antiferromagnet on the kagomé lattice, [Cu3(titmb)2(OCOCH3)6]·H2O{titmb= 1,3,5-tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6 trimethyl-benzene} has been measured at very low temperatures in both pulsed and steady fields. We have found a new dynamical behavior in the magnetization process. A plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization Ms appears in the pulsed field experiments for intermediate sweep rates of the magnetic field and disappears in the steady field experiments. A … Show more

“…Similar plateaux have been observed in other materials or lattice models containing triangle motifs, e.g., triangular 33,34 and kagome [35][36][37] lattices. The 1/3-plateau in the former was explained with "up-up-down" (UUD) spin structure on each triangle, and is therefore dubbed as an UUD phase, which has a quantum origin.…”

“…It is worthy to note, moreover, that the zero-field specific heat can also be simply obtained as a temperature derivative of the internal energy (16), but the final expression is too cumbersome to write it down here explicitly.…”

“…This is the mathematical orgin of the pronounced minimum in dM/dB at B = B sat /3. Plateau like structures in the magnetization versus B in various two-and three-dimensional lattices built of corner-sharing triangles lattices at one-third of the saturated moment have been under investigation for the past two decades as an expression of geometric frustration [1,2,3,14,15]. Moreover, theoretical studies of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Kagomé lattice show that dM/dB has a pronounced minimum at one-third of B sat [4].…”
