Observation of a microcrystalline gel in colloids with competing interactions

Abstract: A stable short-range crystalline structure is observed in colloidal systems with competing short-range attractions and long-range repulsions. We term these structures ''microcrystalline gels'' as the microcrystals are embedded in a dense disordered network.

“…The fast and often abrupt decay of these peaks suggests that the local correlations have a well-defined and rather short range, beyond which the system becomes homogeneous; the correlation range can thus be considered as a measure of the average size of the aggregates. 30 In order to extract this range from the g ( r ), we defined a threshold value, h , and we calculated the maximum interparticle distance, r h max , at which the oscillations of | g ( r ) −1| reach that chosen value, 31 | g ( r h max ) – 1| ≡ h .…”

“…1a), as in our previous studies. 21 In order to systematically explore the effect of attraction on the properties of the clusters, observations are conducted at a similar volume fraction of 0.06 in solutions with increasing attraction strength, as set by the polymer volume fraction. In dispersions with U ¼ À8.8 k B T (Fig.…”

“…Once degassed in a dessicator connected to a vacuum pump, the elastomer was poured into the Petri dish, and the lid with the glass slide assembly was placed over it. (3) The whole assembly was placed in an oven at 80 C for 24 h to cure the elastomer. (4) Once at ambient temperature, the sample holder was separated from the mold with the help of a few drops of ethanol, and screwed to the rotor of an inexpensive peristaltic pump (variable-flow peristaltic pump, Fisher Scientific), installed on a support in such a way that the sample holder rotated exactly in a vertical plane parallel to gravity.…”
