Observation and theory of nonlinear mode couplings between shear Alfvén wave and magnetic island in tokamak plasmas

Abstract: Experimental observation and theoretical analysis are presented for the nonlinear mode couplings between shear Alfvén wave and magnetic island. In the sub-Alfvén frequency range, two kind axi-symmetry magnetic activities with n = 0 have been observed during NBI on HL-2A. One kind has been identified, and belongs to EGAM. Another kind is found for the first time, its frequency lies in the range of TAE frequency. The Fourier bicoherence analysis suggests these axi-symmetry modes are generated by the nonlinear mo… Show more

“…In particular, TAE modes driven by EP beam with a one-third Alfven speed are extensively observed in experiment. In many auxiliary heating experiments, for example, NBI, ECRH/ICRH (electron/ion cyclotron resonant heating), LH (lower hybrid wave heating) and so on, TAE modes are extensively observed [11][12][13]. The TAE instabilities often induce large fast particles loss and eject a great amount of EPs which can damage first wall of vacuum cell of tokamak.…”

“…8 Toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) and other high frequency MHD instabilities have been observed in the experiments. 9 The frequency of those modes is higher than 200 kHz, which exceeds the resonant peak of the standard probes (130 kHz) on HL-2A. Therefore, it is essential to develop a new magnetic probe system with a linear frequency response at least 300 kHz or higher.…”
