Observation and measurement of Higgs boson decays toWW*with the ATLAS detector

Abstract: We report the observation of Higgs boson decays to WW Ã based on an excess over background of 6.1 standard deviations in the dilepton final state, where the Standard Model expectation is 5.8 standard deviations. Evidence for the vector-boson fusion (VBF) production process is obtained with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations. The results are obtained from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb −1 from ffiffi ffi s p ¼ 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at t… Show more

“…The precise list of cuts is specified in table 1 and corresponds to the H → W + W − analysis of ref. [12]. 10 This selection implements a series of cuts similar to the ones used in W + W − signal measurements, including a jet veto.…”

“…In Higgs-boson studies [11][12][13][14][15][16], W + W − production plays an important role as irreducible background in the H → W + W − channel. Such measurements are mostly based on final states with two leptons and two neutrinos, which provide a clean experimental signature, but do not allow for a full reconstruction of the H → W + W − resonance.…”

“…It is worth noting that less precise measurements from other decay channels, such as H → W W ( * ) 26,27 or H → ττ, 29 are in agreement with the determination from H → γγ and H → ZZ ( * ) → llll, within their uncertainties, which are comparably larger.…”

“…In both these final states it is possible to perform a precise measurement of all particles in the decay, leading to an expected relative mass resolution for the Higgs boson between 1 and 2%. [22][23][24][25] [26][27][28][29]34,35 An excellent experimental resolution can also be achieved from the measurement of the H → µµ decay, once there is enough data to observe that decay.…”

“…Jets are clustered from partons using the anti-k T algorithm [87] with a cone radius of R = 0.4. The choice of cuts is adopted from the cut-based VBF category of the H → W W study of ATLAS [88]. The corresponding CMS analysis [89] uses very similar values.…”
