Oblique Incidence and Polarization Insensitive Multiband Metamaterial Absorber With Quad Paired Concentric Continuous Ring Resonators

Abstract: Abstract-Simulation and experimental measurement of a new design of an oblique incidence and polarization insensitive metamaterial absorber with multiband absorption is presented in this paper. The unit cell of the proposed metamaterial absorber comprises concentric continuous rings of different radii and widths placed in four different quadrants with identical pair of rings placed diagonally opposite, with each ring responsible for high absorption. The calculated dispersion behavior of MM absorber in terms of… Show more

“…The LPMADGS structure is fabricated on a double sided copper laminated FR-4 substrate (relative permittivity 4.4, loss tangent 0.02, and thickness 2 mm) by photo-lithographic method followed by wet etching process [25] with dimensions 21 mm × 21 mm × 2 mm shown in Figure 8.…”

“…The top layer consists of log-periodic patches with different radii which form the antenna structure and can be seen in Figure 1(b). The lower layer consists of four pairs of continuous copper ring resonators with different radii [25], positioned in all four quadrants shown in Figures 1(c) and 1(d) which form the DGS. The middle layer consists of an FR-4 substrate (relative permittivity 4.4, loss tangent 0.02, and thickness 2 mm).…”

“…CST Microwave Studio suite is used to simulate unit cell of MMA for normally incident electromagnetic waves with 16,450 tetrahedral meshes. Along the direction of propagation (z-direction), open bounding conditions are applied and along x-direction and ydirection unit cell periodic bounding conditions are applied [19], [20]. The absorptance is calculated using (1) [12]- [14], where S11(f) is the reflectance and S21(f) is the transmittance,…”

“…Research on absorbers using metamaterial technology started from the demonstration of a Perfect Metamaterial Absorber by Landy et al in 2008 [15]. Since then, extensive MM absorbers have been achieved and exhibit extraordinary characteristics, such as single-band [21,22], dual-band [17,23], multi-band [24][25][26], broadband [27,28], polarization-independent [25,29,30] and wide oblique incident angle [23,31,32]. Compared with conventional absorbers, MM absorbers have many advantages including perfect absorption, ultrathin thickness, low profile, and ease of design and fabrication [33].…”

“…The absorber in [26] realizing triple-band absorption has a larger unit cell size. The absorber in [29] has a thicker size, and the simulated absorption efficiency of the first resonance frequency at 7.06 GHz was only 78%.…”
