ABSTRACT. The Southern Central Andes at 36ºS have been recognized as an orogenic belt where contraction, ac com modated mainly by basement structures, is associated with the inversion of a Late TriassicEarly Jurassic extensional detachment. Based on a structural crosssection, constrained by field data, 2D seismic and borehole information, and the processing of Bouger anomalies, we propose a polyphasic tectonic evolution. In the westernmost sector, along the axis of the Cordillera, NW to NNW basement structures were inverted, being a first order control in the generation of frontal narrow Ntrending thinskinned belts. This slip transfer is controlled by the Late Jurassic main detachment. These structures have low gravity anomalies that cross obliquely the main Andean trend. East of this inversion domain, beneath the frontal thinskinned belts, seismic information reveals that Late Triassic wedgelike depocenters did not experience substantial inversion. To the east doublevergent basement blocks define the Andean emergent orogenic front at these latitudes. These contractional structures truncate gravity anomalies defined by basement discontinuities, indicating that they are not related to tectonic inversion, in contraposition to the westernmost domain. Two contractional phases were distinguished. The oldest is Late Cretaceous in age, as inferred from onlap relations in Upper Cretaceous strata identi fied in seismic lines. These successions have a maximum age of 97 Ma as inferred by UPb in detrital zircons published in previous studies in the area. Contrastingly, the easternmost sector was mainly deformed in Late Miocene times as inferred from less than 18 Ma old synorogenic deposits. Moreover, contractional mechanisms varied through time for each specific sector. While Late Cretaceous contractional tectonics was generated by tectonic inversion and subordinate thinskinned deformation, it is proposed that Late Miocene deformation was controlled mainly by brittleductile transi tions at the upper crust with no major influence of previous structures. This fact can be explained by a higher thermal flux achieved in the retroarc area in the last 17 Ma due to the eastward arc expansion during a shallow subduction regime. RESUMEN. ABsTrACT. The Triassic and Jurassic tectonic history of northern Chile has been dominated by extension, although clear evidence about the nature and geometry of the extensional basins and subsequent inversion structures has been adequately illustrated in only a few cases. In this contribution we present a structural study of the Lautaro Basin located at the western edge of the Frontal Cordillera in the Atacama region of northern Chile. The Lautaro Basin is a Jurassic half-graben, filled by at least 2,600 m of marine deposits of the Lautaro Formation and developed on top of, at least 2,000 m of Triassic volcanic successions of the La Ternera Formation, also accumulated during an earlier period of extensional deformation. Detailed field mapping and construction of a regional balanced cross-section, supported by good exposures along the Copiapó River valley, allow reconstruction of the structural style of both the Jurassic and Triassic extensional depocenters. New structural data have shown that the Lautaro Basin has a complex structural framework reflected in two major Mesozoic extensional periods, overprinted by Cenozoic inversion involving thin-and thick-skinned tectonics. Shortening was accommodated by a combination of inversion of pre-existing normal faults, buttresses, development of footwall short-cuts, and both thin and thick-skinned thrusting. New estimates of shortening are up to 13.1 km (30%), while Mesozoic extension is estimated to be 3 km (7%). resuMen. La Cuenca Lautaro: un registro de inversión tectónica en el norte de Chile. Durante el Triásico y Jurá-sico la evolución tectónica del norte de Chile fue dominada por extensión cortical. No obstante, evidencias claras acerca del estilo estructural y subsecuente inversión de las cuencas asociadas con el evento extensional, han sido ilustradas en pocos casos. En este trabajo, se presenta un estudio estructural de la Cuenca Lautaro, localizada en el borde occidental de la Cordillera Frontal, en la región de Atacama del norte de Chile. La Cuenca Lautaro, es un hemigraben que aloja al menos 2.600 m de depósitos marinos de la Formación Lautaro, acumulados sobre al menos 2.000 m de sucesiones volcánicas triásicas de la Formación La Ternera. Los excelentes afloramientos de la región permitieron construir una sección balanceada y restaurar el estilo estructural de los depocentros extensionales triásicos y jurásicos. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que la Cuenca Lautaro tiene una arquitectura estructural compleja, reflejada en dos episodios extensionales mayores. Posteriormente, se sobreimpone al menos un evento de inversión tectónica que desarrolla una tectónica mixta de piel fina y piel gruesa. El acortamiento se acomoda por una combinación de inversión de fallas preexistentes, desarrollo de fallas de atajo y corrimientos de piel fina y piel gruesa, que involucran bloques rígidos o 'buttresses'. Las estimaciones de acortamiento son de 13,1 km (30%), mientras que la extensión mesozoica es de 3 km (7%).

ABSTRACT. Analogue models combining different sets of preexisting structural weaknesses were developed to understand their evolution during regional ~ENE shortening. Strain analysis of simulations was performed with the GEODEF 1.1 software, a tool that allows to quantify deformation in plan view on the basis of displacement fields. Results showed up that regional NNE heterogeneities are reactivated as dextral reverse-slip structures, though NNE neoformed thrusts are also present. Likewise, dominant sinistral strike-slip motions have been obtained for reactivated second-order WNW structures whereas sinistral reverse-slip has been recorded for NW ones. Comparison of these results with structural, kinematic and paleomagnetic data supports partitioned dextral transpression for the northern Andean Precordillera since the Miocene. Moreover, models not only confirm sinistral strike-slip motions for WNW structures of the Precordillera but also suggest that they would represent preexisting crustal fabrics that were reactivated during the Andean orogeny. These cross-strike structures have played a significant role in the construction and evolution of the fold and thrust belt as they segmentate the activity of orogen-parallel structures. RESUMEN. Estructura neógena de la Precordillera Andina, Argentina: aportes de modelos análogos. Se llevaron a cabo una serie de modelos análogos en los que se combinaron diferentes sistemas de debilidades estructurales preexistentes a fin de entender su evolución vinculada a acortamiento regional en dirección ~ENE. El análisis de la deformación de las simulaciones fue realizado a través del software GEODEF 1.1, una herramienta que permite la cuantificación de la deformación en planta sobre la base de campos de desplazamiento. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que las heterogeneidades regionales de rumbo NNE se reactivan como estructuras dextrales inversas, si bien también se generan corrimientos neoformados de igual orientación. Asimismo, se obtuvieron desplazamientos de rumbo sinistral dominante para estructuras reactivadas de segundo orden de rumbo WNW, mientras que desplazamientos sinistrales inversos se registraron en aquellas de rumbo NW. La comparación de estos resultados con datos estructurales, cinemáticos y paleomagnéticos señala la existencia de transpresión dextral particionada para el precordillera norte desde el Mioceno. A su vez, los modelos no solo confirman los desplazamientos de rumbo sinistral para las estructuras WNW de la precordillera, sino que también sugieren que estas constituirían fábricas corticales preexistentes que fueron reactivadas durante la orogenia andina. Estas estructuras oblicuas han tenido un rol significativo en la construcción y evolución de la faja plegada y corrida, ya que segmentan la actividad de las estructuras paralelas al orógeno.
