Objet et processus de recherche : Méthodologie et épistémologie du concept de représentation(s)

International audienceThis paper draws on the notion of representation – both as an object of research and as a heuristic tool – to examine the relation between theory and empirical research. Firstly, the article proposes a precise concept of representation(s) by drawing on the German philosophy of culture and, in particular, on the works of Ernst Cassirer. Through the central element of creation, this concept allows for a direct link to methodology, mainly non-directive interviews and the analysis of cultural performances. Secondly, this article addresses the epistemological dimension of the concept of representation(s), namely its implications for the ways in which we choose research questions or select and structure information obtained from the field, analyze data or present research results. It shows what a concept of representation(s) based on Cassirer’s works can contribute to debates on the role of representation(s) for knowledge production in general and on the method of non-directive interviews in particular.Cet article propose d’approcher la question de l’imbrication entre théorie et recherches empiriques à travers la notion de représentation(s). Une notion qui relève d’une double dimension. D’un côté, les représentation(s) constituent un objet de recherche, mais, de l’autre, la notion renvoie à des questions épistémologiques. Dans un premier temps, je montrerai comment un retour à la philosophie de la culture allemande – et en particulier aux travaux d’Ernst Cassirer – permet de préciser la notion de représentation(s) et de construire un cadre méthodologique qui s’appuie sur des entretiens non-directifs et une analyse de productions culturelles. Je m’attacherai en second lieu à sa dimension épistémologique propre. La question des représentation(s) intervient en effet dans la collecte, dans l’analyse et dans la présentation de données empiriques. Cet article entend démontrer les apports des travaux de Cassirer au débat sur le rôle des représentation(s) pour la construction du savoir en général, et sur la méthode de l’entretien non-directif, en particulier
