The mechanism of inheritance is a powerful tool used to describe complexity of a reality fraction. It is particularly important for knowledge representation systems modelling. It provides a specific ability to take over properties from a base element, what is crucial for conciseness, and modelling efficiency as well. In the Association-Oriented Database Metamodel, inheritance retains coherence with the object-oriented model in the most general terms. However, it has been otherwise defined which stems from the specificity of the metamodel, and particularly from its capabilities which have blazed a trail for its further extension. The main contribution of this article is a description of preliminary assumptions, postulates and conceptual solutions applicable to inheritance. They have been discussed against the background of the Association-Oriented Database Metamodel as well as an objectoriented model compared with the former.

Abstract. ODRA (Object Database for Rapid Application development) is an object-oriented application development environment currently being constructed at the Polish-Japanese Institute of Information Technology. The aim of the project is to design a next-generation development tool for future database application programmers. The tool is based on the query language SBQL (Stack-Based Query Language), a new, powerful and high level object-oriented programming language tightly coupled with query capabilities. The SBQL execution environment consists of a virtual machine, a main memory DBMS and an infrastructure supporting distributed computing. The paper presents design goals of ODRA, its fundamental mechanisms and some relationships with other solutions.

The conceptual modeling of real-life situations often requires expressing some kind of multiple, multi-aspect or dynamic specialization. On the other hand, multiple or dynamic inheritance impose troublesome anomalies and thus are sporadically and not fully supported by development tools. In this paper we suggest a new approach to the concept of dynamic object roles, capable of expressing all the mentioned special kinds of specialization while avoiding the anomalies of multiple inheritance. The base mechanism of the notion is described and the possible design decisions concerning its realization in a modeling language and implementation, having impact on its overall usability, are discussed.
