Objective scoring of hidradenitis suppurativa reflecting the role of tobacco smoking and obesity

Abstract: The modified HSS is simple and practical and it extracts important clinical information. A connection between disease severity and BMI as well as smoking habits in patients with HS is presented. The results suggest that the HSS may be a relevant outcome measure in future therapeutic trials in HS.

“…These include genetic predisposition, hormonal dysregulation and an aberrant immune response to commensal bacteria 7, 8, 9, 10. A number of exogenous influences have also been implicated in population‐based studies of HS, particularly smoking and obesity,11 although a causative relationship has not been established.…”

“…Dans la majorité des cas, les patients présentent un stade II de la maladie au moment du diagnostic, sans doute en raison du délai de diagnostic. Une autre classification proposée par Sartorius [9] (Tableau 2) permet une observation plus dynamique de la sévérité de la maladie. L'intérêt de l'imagerie a été évalué dans la maladie de Verneuil par trois techniques : l'échographie à haute fréquence [10], l'imagerie par résonance magnétique [11] et la fistulographie [12].…”

“…In severe HS, lesions, scars and sinuses coalesce into chronic inflammatory, suppurative skin plaques. Not surprisingly, HS can have a large impact on quality of life, equivalent to severe psoriasis, 2 and results in functional impairment similar or greater than heart disease, diabetes or asthma, when measured by the EQ5D scale.…”

“…There is a strong association between HS and smoking, with a majority of patients being current or ex-smokers, as well as obesity. 2 Data are limited regarding the effects of smoking cessation and weight loss on disease severity, however non-smokers are more likely to spontaneously remit. 5 There is evidence that HS is associated with other chronic inflammatory conditions, in particular inflammatory bowel disease.…”
