Objective safety compliance checks for source code

Abstract: Safety standards such as IEC 61508 are an important instrument for developing safety-critical systems. They provide requirements and recommendations to assist engineers in system and software development. Nevertheless, applying this standard in practice is difficult due to unclear requirements and unclear or missing acceptance criteria. We systematically developed a quality model including proper measurement support that covers the coderelated parts of IEC 61508 in [20]. In this paper, we present the assessmen… Show more

“…The study was based on open-source software and did not consider industrial strength software. This is a threat to validity as we know from other work [56] that there are, for example, significant differences in internal software quality between safety-critical and non-safety-critical software. We therefore cannot conclude whether our approach would also hold for safety critical systems.…”

“…In previous work, we have already made good experience and gained knowledge in assessing source code quality by measuring quality aspects based on violations of best coding practices as shown in, e.g., [ [MPS14]. We want to map this idea to the domain of object-oriented design by identifying violations of object-oriented design best practices directly from the source code.…”
