Objective Measures of Neural Processing of Interaural Time Differences

Abstract: We assessed neural sensitivity to interaural time differences (ITDs) conveyed in the temporal fine structure (TFS) of low-frequency sounds and ITDs conveyed in the temporal envelope of amplitude-modulated (AM'ed) high-frequency sounds. Using electroencephalography (EEG), we recorded brain activity to sounds in which the interaural phase difference (IPD) of the TFS (or the modulated temporal envelope) was repeatedly switched between leading in one ear or the other. When the amplitude of the tones is modulated e… Show more

“…Also the maximum carrier frequency for which IPDs evoke cortical auditory evoked potentials decreases by middle-age ( Papesh et al., 2017 ; Ross et al., 2007 ). Do note that cortical auditory evoked potentials merely indicate a detection of change ( Clinard, Tremblay, & Krishnan, 2010 ), whereas the IPM-FRs extend our knowledge of the auditory system by quantifying the relative processing of different IPM depths ( Haywood et al., 2015 ; McAlpine et al., 2016 ; Undurraga et al., 2016 ).…”

“…IPM-FRs presumably originate from neurons in cortical areas ( Haywood et al., 2015 ; McAlpine et al., 2016 ; Undurraga et al., 2016 ). However, changes in IPM-FRs could also reflect reduced low-level temporal resolution.…”

“…Recently, there has been growing interest in the use of a new electrophysiological measure called the interaural phase modulation-following response (IPM-FR), which has been developed as a more efficient method to assess the neural encoding of IPDs (Haywood et al, 2015;McAlpine et al, 2016;Undurraga et al, 2016). Similar to neural responses measured by Ross et al (2007a;2007b) and Papesh et al (2017), this response is elicited by a shift in the phase of an AM carrier tone at the two ears.…”
