“…Different methods of evaluating the technical skills gained by novice microsurgeons in the laboratory have been reported, ranging from direct observation and assessment by experts to the ability of surgeons to complete timed surgical drill tasks. 1, 3,15 In our laboratory, we use a detailed and systematic checklist to independently evaluate the various steps involved in performing a microsurgical anastomosis, such as handling of tissues and surgical suture, facility with tying secure and square knots, correctly setting up the anastomosis, and methodically executing the steps involved. A global rating scale to assess the surgeon's overall ability to plan and execute the operation is also evaluated.…”

“…Different methods of evaluating the technical skills gained by novice microsurgeons in the laboratory have been reported, ranging from direct observation and assessment by experts to the ability of surgeons to complete timed surgical drill tasks (1,3,15). The author recommends using a detailed and systematic trainee evaluation checklist, which objectively evaluates each of the steps involved in a microsurgical anastomosis, including tissue manipulation, suture handling, tying secure and square knots, correctly setting-up the anastomosis, and progressing through the procedure in a methodical fashion.…”

“…Although practice modalities for rhinoplasty have been studied, no model has focused on emulating open graft-specific placement using material that resembles septal cartilage in a human nose. 10,11 To validate the effectiveness of training models for surgery, [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] precision and accuracy of suture placement have been used as a method to measure and compare the skill of residents and experts objectively. 20,21 More recently, hand motion has been objectively tracked using either optical or electromagnetic devices in laparoscopic, robotic, and open surgery, and also for assessment of IV insertion and sonography procedures.…”
