Objective Evaluation of Fabric Handle by Simple Measurement Methods

Abstract: In this study, objective and subjective evaluations of fabrics were made to predict fabric handle in a simple way. The aim of this research was to select a suitable form of regression model and predict total handle value with a minimum number of parameters to make a practical approach by using simple laboratory measurements. For this purpose, a wide database of 71 worsted men's suitings was prepared by making subjective and objective evaluations. Subjective tests of primary handle attributes (softness-stiffnes… Show more

“…One reason, as was mentioned previously, is that the attempts made by these devices are based on objective measurements of physical properties on real fabrics. 1,[21][22][23] But so far, there is not a commonly accepted FOM that is capable of truly and comprehensively quantifying people's complicated sense of touch. [24][25][26] In fact, according to the previous description about sensory evaluation and the definition put forward by the Textile Institute in 1975 that fabric hand is 'the subjective assessment of a textile material obtained from the sense of touch', 27 there are enough reasons to believe that the most reliable and effective way to study fabric tactile properties might be from the perspective of human natural perception.…”

“…They used objective measurement results which are tensile, bending, shear, compression and surface properties, and pulling through a nozzle test, to predict subjective fabric handle. They used linear and log linear equations and claimed that very good result was obtained within the R 2 =0.88 [15]. Park and co-workers used regression equation to estimate holding power and pressure sensation utilizing average pressure and pressure distribution, and constructed the regression equation to estimate Comfortable fittability index using the calculated pressure sensation.…”

“…The first three methods are evaluated by special meters, but the last one doesn't require any special meters (Kayseri et al, 2012). These two systems are well known around the world, but the high prices of these systems and the complexity of methods made researchers use alternative fabric measuring systems or individual simple methods (Hatch, 1993;Mäkinen et al, 2005;Sülar & Okur, 2008).…”

“…At the beginning of the studies related to the subjective evaluation of fabric handle, the factors affecting this psychological decision were examined by Binns in 1926 (Sülar & Okur, 2008). However, in 1930, Peirce, who was a pioneer of objective studies on fabric handle, emphasized that it was a measurable property.…”
