Objective Evaluation for Wrinkle Appearance of Fabrics by Image Processing and Slit Beam Projecting Technique

Abstract: The slit beam projecting technique combined with the image processing is used, and three-dimensional image of the wrinkle of fabrics is obtained by the method, in which there is no influence on the results from the colors and the patterns of fabrics, and the fabric wrinkles can be evaluated and analyzed objectively. The parameters, such as standard deviation of height values of surface profiles, increasing ratio of surface area, one of surface length, and fractal dimension of surface, are defined and suggested… Show more

“…The last characteristic is the wrinkle sharpness. We evaluated several descriptors suitable for wrinkle evaluation, including luminance statistical functions, Haralick textural features, 3 frequency and amplitude analysis based on 2D-fast Fourier transform (FFT) 2,5 fractal dimension calculation, 7,15 wavelet analysis, 6 and edge detection-based descriptors. 4 We selected two quantitative descriptors to evaluate wrinkles that are closely related to the wrinkle properties as perceived by the evaluators: the standard deviation of luminance, and the summation of wrinkle edge strength.…”

“…Objective methods based on two-dimensional (2D) images 2–5 and 3D topography evaluation has been previously proposed. The 3D information from fabric is usually extracted by laser line projection 612 or different stereo techniques. 1315 These systems are usually tested using wrinkle replicas or fabric samples of simple geometry, instead of actual clothes.…”

“…Therefore, a system is needed that can accurately quantify surface smoothness in a practical and repeatable manner. Previous research efforts have focused on this goal with limited success [2,3,4,5,6,7,10,14,15,16]. Of special interest are previous efforts that are similar to this work.…”
