Objective Estimates of Physical Activity and Sedentary Time among Young Adults

Abstract: Background. This study examines factors associated with physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviors (SB) in young adults (18–35 years) and compares objective and subjective assessment measures of PA and SB. Methods. 595 young adults (27.7 ± 4.4 years; 25.5 ± 2.6 kg/m2) enrolled in the Study of Novel Approaches to Weight Gain Prevention (SNAP) trial. Hours/day spent in SB (<1.5 METs) and minutes/week spent in bout-related moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA (MVPA; ≥3 METs and ≥10 min) were assessed using self-… Show more

“…Traditional television watching has declined in the past 10 years, and it has been replaced by other screen-based activities [7]. In their leisure time, adolescents (aged 13-18) use screen-based media, on average, 6 h 40 min per day [8].…”

“…To the best of authors’ knowledge, no study has yet explored the associations between different domains of sedentary behaviors and sleep duration in young adults. A recent study showed that young adults spent approximately 64 h/week (9.1 h/day) in sedentary behaviors [15], yet 18.1% and 17.1% of them were ‘short’ and ‘long’ sleepers [16]. Also, in a majority of countries, adolescents/young adults ≥19 years of age start university, move out of their parents’ home or start work, which leads to higher amount of psychological distress, extensive electronic media use and disturbed sleep [17].…”

“…Sedentary behavior, defined as waking time spent sitting or reclining without being otherwise active ( Sedentary Behaviour Research Network, 2012 ), is highly prevalent in the United States. Recent data from a sample of younger adults showed that this population sits for >9 h/day ( Unick et al, 2017 ). Moreover, young adults have shown the largest increase in sedentary time coupled with the largest decrease in moderate to vigorous physical activity over the preceding decades, in comparison to other age groups, placing them at greater risk for development of chronic disease ( Nelson et al, 2008 ).…”
