Lichens are symbiotic organisms with an extraordinary capability to colonise areas of extreme climate and heavily contaminated sites, such as metal-rich habitats. Lichens have developed several mechanisms to overcome the toxicity of metals, including the ability to bind metal cations to extracellular sites of symbiotic partners and to subsequently form oxalates. Calcium is an essential alkaline earth element that is important in various cell processes. Calcium can serve as a metal ligand but can be toxic at elevated concentrations. This study investigated calcium-rich and calcium-poor sites and the lichen species that inhabit them (Cladonia sp.). The calcium content of these lichen species were analyzed, along with localized calcium oxalate formed in thalli collected from each site. The highest concentration of calcium was found in the lichen squamules, which can serve as a final deposit for detoxification. Interestingly, the highest content of calcium in Cladonia furcata was localized to the upper part of the thallus, which is the youngest. The produced calcium oxalates were species-specific. Whewellite (CaC2O4∙H2O) was formed in the case of C. furcata and weddellite (CaC2O4∙2H2O) was identified in C. foliacea.

Fire is defined as an extremely hazardous event, causing a threat to life and health of persons, but also damage to the economic sphere. It has been shown many times that fire can occur anywhere and at any time. In order to minimize the risk of fire manifestations, it is necessary to understand its course. In technical practice, computational models are used to determine the partial manifestations of fire, such as fire spread rate, smoke generation rate in the burning area, formation of toxic burning products, flame height, and others. One of the important characteristics is also the energy balance in the burning area relating to the character of burning material, access of oxygen necessary for exothermic reaction of burning, and reaction of the installed safety devices. In this paper we will point out the fire safety of the building. The FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) model is recently used in practice, and its advantage is the possibility to model fire even in large and atypical spaces. The contribution of this paper is the practical application of fire safety of construction using the FDS Model, to reduce the cost of fire safety for the structure being constructed. Attention was paid to evaluating how the heat energy that is released during a fire can be influenced by the installed stable fire-extinguishing equipment, taking into consideration the fire resistance of the building structures.

Sound visualization tools are now widely used in industry. As a tool, acoustic cameras are also well-suited for faster identification of errors as well as individual states while operating devices. The aim of this paper was to locate and quantify noise sources on a packet sorting line using an acoustic camera and then to propose noise reduction measures. Localization of noise sources was performed by means of an acoustic camera with a microphone ring array. The result of these measurements and analyses was to sort the individual noise sources from less noisy to the noisiest, which gives a good assumption for better planning of spending on the implementation of noise reduction measures. The outputs of these measurements also give information on the character and frequency composition of the sound of individual sources, which will help out in the design of specific noise measures.
