Obesity in Early Adulthood as a Risk Factor for Psoriatic Arthritis

Abstract: To study whether obesity increases the risk of psoriatic arthritis (PsA), given that obesity is a risk factor for psoriasis and is associated with more severe disease. Design: Case series. We used Cox regression analysis to study the relationship between obesity and PsA while controlling for age at psoriasis onset, current body mass index (BMI), sex, family history of psoriasis, worst-ever body surface area (BSA) involvement, Koebner phenomenon, and nail involvement.

“…Obesity and a high body mass index (BMI) have been shown to be risk factors for the development of psoriasis, and in large, prospective studies obesity preceded the development of psoriasis [4]. More recently, obesity in adulthood has been shown to be a risk factor also for psoriatic arthritis [5]. On the other hand, once psoriasis has been established it may favor behaviors (e.g.…”

“…Morbidity and mortality risk is associated with obese nutritional status due to the comorbidities of obesity (e.g., insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, sleep apnea, arthritis, certain types of cancer) [59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70]. In addition, abdominal obesity was found to increase the prediction of health risk in obese nutritional status [71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79].…”
