Obesity: A Risk Factor for Infection after Surgery

Abstract: Obesity is a prevalent health problem all over the world. It is associated with several diseases including infections. It impairs the immune system function by plenty of mechanisms. For instance, leptin and adiponectin are cytokines produced by the adipose tissue, both participating in immunity, but their effects are impaired in obese patients. Moreover, immune cells also show defects in their functions. They produce a pro-inflammatory state and contribute to obesity-related diseases. Innate immune system and … Show more

We included one of these comorbidities only if its corresponding code was present in at least three outpatient diagnoses or one inpatient diagnosis.…”

“…Due to increased tissue tension, decreased tissue perfusion, and slowed wound healing, obesity is a substantial risk factor for SSIs [22] , especially in cardiac surgery. The existence of more adipose tissue in obese patients can act as a potential source of microorganisms, rendering them more vulnerable to infections [23] . Furthermore, the administration of antibiotics to obese patients poses a challenge due to the potential inadequacy of conventional dosing strategies in achieving sufficient tissue concentrations.…”
