Obese First degree relatives of hemodialysis patients are at Higher Risk for Developing Kidney Diseases: In a Cross-sectional Study

Abstract: Background: Previously, it has been demonstrated that obesity is one of the strongest risk factors for incident chronic kidney diseases (CKDs). Currently, we examine the association between Body mass index (BMI) and CKD in first degree relatives (FDRs) of renal failure patients on hemodialysis. Materials and methods: In a cross-sectional study, 135 FDRs of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on hemodialysis were included. Serum creatinine, uric acid, calcium, phosphate, and alkaline phosphatase were … Show more

“…Obesity was observed among 14% of FDRs compared with 6.7% of the controls. The prevalence of obesity observed in this study was similar to 14.6% reported in Cameroun by Temgoua et al 60 . This similarity may be explained by shared socio-economic factors and lifestyle changes.…”

“…The higher prevalence of obesity observed in the later studies may be related to the socio-demographic characteristics of the population studied, including the level of urbanization, lifestyle measures and diets. Obese family relatives of ESRD patients have been reported to have increased risk for developing CKD due to the presence of high ACR and lower eGFR in them 60 . Therefore, obese individuals should be screened for kidney disease because interventions targeted at obesity reduction have been shown to retard CKD progression.…”
