Ob' river discharge from TOPEX/Poseidon satellite altimetry (1992–2002)

Abstract: The paper discusses an application of the TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) altimetry data to estimate the discharge of one of the largest Arctic rivers-the Ob' river. We first discuss the methodology to select and retrieve the altimeter water levels during the various phases of the hydrological regime. Then we establish the relationships between the satellite-derived water levels and the in situ river discharge measurements at the Salekhard gauging station near the Ob' estuary. The comparison of in situ and satellite-deri… Show more

“…Additional principles include the statement that local ecological conditions are affected by landscape context or attributes of the surrounding landscape [75]. Methods of landscape ecology include also the remote sensing and are described by many authors [76][77][78].…”

“…In Kouraev et al (2004), the authors performed a more rigorous geographical selection of the altimetric data by considering 28.5-m resolution Landsat images and selecting only parts of the satellite ground tracks that cover the main channel of the river (Ob' River). Zakharova et al (2006) used JERS-1-SAR images and defined a virtual station by a rectangular window.…”

“…Moreover, if radar altimetry sampling periods, which correspond to satellite cycle durations, range from 10 (TOPEX/POSEIDON) to 35 days (ENVISAT), it has been shown that daily water stage estimation can be provided by adequate interpolation techniques associated with in situ data (Roux et al, 2008). Additionally, satellite altimetry already allows river discharge to be estimated by establishing rating curves using altimetric heights and either remotely measured discharge (Coe & Birkett, 2004;Kouraev et al, 2004), or local model-based discharge estimates (Leon et al, 2006). Also, lake heights can be predicted (Coe & Birkett, 2004) and flood-plain water storage estimated .…”
