OA01.47. Phytochemical study and evaluation of antileukemic activity of ripe fruit of Opuntia elatior Mill

Abstract: Purpose:Opuntia elatior Mill. (Family: Cactacea) is a xerophytic perennial bushy shrub, 1-3 m tall. It is native of Caribbean, Central America and northern South America, but actually it is fully naturalized in many part of the world like Mediterranean, Australia, Africa and India. Ripe fruits of this plant contain red pigment i.e. betanin which is betacyanin pigment. It is recently documented that natural food colors such as betanin can inhibit the cell proliferation of a variety of human tumor cells. In view… Show more

“…The cytotoxic evaluation showed a potent action against K562 (Human chronic myelocytic leukemia) cell line. Hydroalcoholic extract of the fruits of OE have persuasive antioxidant activity and promising antileukemic activity [17]. LC50 value of OE in aqueous fraction showed more cytotoxic activity than Tamoxifen.…”

“…Ethanolic extract of OE contains alkaloids, carbohydrates, [5,6,[15][16][17] fats, [5,6,[15][16][17] oils, flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, steroids, saponins, [6,[15][16][17] proteins, [5,6] betalains, [5,6,17] and Vitamin C. [5] Major constituents of OE are carbohydrates (glucose, sucrose, reducing hexose monosaccharide ie. Glucose and galactose), polyphenols (vannilic, syringic and protocatechuric phenolic acids), flavonoids (flavonoids and flavonone) and betalains (betacyanins type of color pigments).…”
