O3 profiles retrieved from limb scatter measurements: Theory

Abstract: Abstract. An algorithm is presented for retrieving vertical profiles of O3 concentration using measurements of UV and visible light scattered from the limb of the atmosphere. The UV measurements provide information about the O3 profile in the upper and middle stratosphere, while only visible wavelengths are capable of probing the lower stratospheric 03 profile. Sensitivity to the underlying scene reflectance is greatly reduced by normalizing measurements at a tangent height high in the atmosphere (-55 km), and… Show more

“…The current SCIAMACHY limb retrieval (V2.9) uses combined spectral information from the UV and visible spectral ranges to obtain vertical profiles of ozone (Flittner et al, 2000;Rohen et al, 2006). As the first step, the limb spectral radiances are integrated in ±1 nm intervals around the central points.…”

“…Furthermore, it provides a kind of self-calibration of the instrument since the instrument calibration parameters do not differ much for different tangent heights. In the visible spectral range, the so-called triplet method (Flittner et al, 2000) is used subsequently to minimize the influence of the broadband spectral features, e.g., Rayleigh and aerosol scattering. In this way the measurement vector, y, is obtained from the normalized radiances at 525, 589 and 675 nm as follows:…”

“…The sensitivity of clouds, particularly those at low altitude, is reduced by normalization with a high-altitude reference spectrum (von Savigny et al, 2003). Errors at 20 km are typically < 1 % when effective albedo is simultaneously retrieved (Flittner et al, 2000).…”

“…The retrieval algorithm for the first product is developed and maintained at York University (Toronto, Canada). It applies the inversion technique developed by Flittner et al (2000) and McPeters et al (2000) to OSIRIS radiances measured at three wavelengths in the Chappuis absorption band (von Savigny et al, 2003). The resulting ozone number density profiles, version 3.0 (v3.0), are provided from 10-46 km with a 2 km spacing.…”
