The Roman conquest of Hispania, although well-known through written sources, still requires many clarifications at the archaeological level. Apparently, no trade contacts were made with the western Atlantic territories during the early stages of the Italic presence in the Iberian Peninsula. In this paper, we try to accomplish a transversal reading of the main data available on the older contexts that confirm the presence of the Roman Republic in this territory. Decimus Iunius Brutus undoubtedly played a decisive role as governor of Ulterior between 138 and 133 BCE, revitalising the Romanization of western Iberia. Archaeological data from the area of Lisbon and the Lower Tagus peninsula, as well as elements from the Mondego valley, seem to support this interpretation.

These data seem to confirm the general character of westernmost Iberia as a refugium, most likely due to the thermo‐regulatory effect of the Atlantic Ocean.…”

Currently available data on the Pleistocene human occupation of the westernmost territories of Iberia attest to the presence of Middle Palaeolithic industries from c. 240 ka cal bp until c. 37 ka cal bp. Previous studies focusing on this time frame have suggested that Middle Palaeolithic populations were highly mobile and predominately utilised locally available raw materials, with many cave and open‐air sites being located near fluvial settings. Other than these observations, no specific studies have focused on exploring the factors influencing human site location choice during that time range. Employing statistical and GIS approaches, this paper provides an initial assessment of spatial patterning in human settlement during the Middle Palaeolithic of westernmost Iberia. Results show that site locations are biased towards lower elevations and riverine settings and suggest that distance to rivers might have impacted the diversity and specific types of lithic raw materials used at each site. These results help to shed light on the particularities of Neanderthal adaptations in a region regarded as a refugium during periods of unfavourable climate during the Middle Palaeolithic.

Exponemos una visión analítica de las que son, a nuestro juicio, las principales líneas de investigación activas en la arqueología e historia militar antiguas de la península ibérica, con énfasis en los trabajos publicados desde 2000. Se analiza el estado de la disciplina, y se discuten cuestiones de alcance a partir de las etapas de la conquista romana, la arqueología de campos de batalla, los efectos sobre la población civil, el estudio del armamento con sus implicaciones a distintos niveles, los trabajos sobre campamentos y fortificaciones y la arqueología experimental.
