This article aims to reflect on the communication process as a valuable tool for providing quality, ethical, and appropriate care as based on first-hand reports I have received throughout my career as a psychologist. From my experience working with patients diagnosed with chronic illnesses and irreversible conditions in a hospital specialized in long-term care in the city of Suzano, located in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, it became clear to me how communication in the healthcare setting can promote relief, minimize suffering, and favor the success of the proposed treatment. Likewise, depending on the way it is practiced, not only can it negatively interfere with the biopsychosocial and spiritual spheres of patients and their families, but also harm the healthcare professional-patient relationship.

This study focuses on the perception of aging and death among the elderly, addressing the contribution of psychology to help them face the challenges related to these natural and inevitable processes in human life. Aging is a period of biological, psychological, socioeconomic and cultural changes, often accompanied by significant losses. Family support plays a crucial role in this context. The perception of death in old age varies widely, influenced by past experiences, religious and cultural beliefs, as well as the physical and mental health of the elderly. It is fundamental to promote an open dialogue about death in society, reducing stigmas and taboos, so that the elderly feel free to share their concerns. Furthermore, it is important to recognize that aging is not homogeneous, and individual experiences vary, requiring personalized approaches. Psychology plays a vital role in coping with grief in old age, offering emotional and psychological support. Therapeutic techniques must be adapted to the individual needs of the bereaved, aiming to help them deal with their emotions in a healthy way and rebuild their lives. In summary, this study highlights the importance of psychology and gerontology in understanding aging and death among the elderly, aiming to improve their quality of life and reduce the fear associated with death.

A tanatologia é uma área de estudo recente, e pode ser definida de forma sintetizada como o estudo da morte, segundo o dicionário Houaiss, a tanatologia é estabelecida como a “Teoria ou estudo científico sobre a morte, suas causas e fenômenos a ela ligados”. Por a tanatologia abranger vários fenômenos ligados à morte isso a faz uma ciência com com grande participação em outras áreas que possam estar relacionadas direta ou indiretamente com a morte, a exemplo dos cuidados paliativos, antropologia forense, psicologia e fisiologia. O conhecimento da tanatologia sobre os processos que acontecem no ante-mortem são de suma importância dentro dos cuidados paliativos, pois é necessário ter a intelecção dos processos psicológicos que apresentam o paciente em estágio de terminalidade, com a finalidade de responder dúvidas que o mesmo possa apresentar, tentando amenizar o máximo possível o sofrimento que o paciente irá passar durante todos os processos de uma morte iminente. O entendimento dos processos post-mortem estão muito relacionados à antropologia forense, tendo como braço fundamental da tanatologia. Tal ciência encarrega-se de estudar as causas que geraram a morte, investigando-se os diversos núcleos nos quais o indivíduo encontra-se inserido, para que não apenas seja investigada a causa da morte, mas a todo âmbito que aquele indivíduo encontrava-se circundado.
