Introduction: Hunger has stood out as one of the world's biggest problems, mainly influenced by food waste. Objective: Quantitatively describe the entry and exit of food in two food banks located in the Federal District and in Rio de Janeiro. Methods: Though the spreadsheets provided by the Food Banks of the Federal District and Irajá-RJ, containing total values of food received and usable and disposable products, graphs of time series and trends were made. Results and discussion: The values of usable foods in both food banks were greater than 80% of the monthly amounts, that is, this quantity is destined to registered philanthropic entities. In relation to disposable foodstuffs, these are intended for the manufacture of composting and/or animal feed. Final considerations: The Food Bank has a fundamental role on the use and disposal of foods fit for consumption. In this context, the nutritionist can contribute to the improvement of the Food Banks, aiming at reducing food waste, increasing sustainability and especially food and nutritional safety. Through actions of Food and Nutritional Education, in order to raise awareness of the people involved.

Background: There is a lack of studies on the waste of fruits and vegetables covering both distributors and the retail sector. Our study advances from previous ones by proposing the analysis of local retailers of different sizes and wholesalers. Our objective was to analyze the logistical practices to reduce the waste of fruits and vegetables in wholesalers and small retailers in Federal District, Brazil. Methods: A multiple case study was conducted with 19 retailers and eight wholesalers. We administered semi-structured interviews and performed documental analysis and direct observation. Results: The findings demonstrated the leading logistical practices of handling, conservation, management and control, and consumer awareness about food waste. The type of retailer was limited to grocery stores and fruit shops, and the type of food covered only fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, we considered the food waste generated in the logistics processes and not that after consumption. Conclusions: More than a third of the food produced worldwide is lost or wasted. A considerable part of the food waste is associated with the lack of an adequate structure of the logistical processes. The results may contribute to the adoption of practices related to reducing food waste by retailers and wholesalers.

O Brasil é um dos maiores produtores e exportadores de alimentos do mundo. No entanto, milhões de pessoas não possuem acesso à alimentação adequada, em quantidade e qualidade suficientes. As principais fontes de desperdício de alimentos do país estão relacionadas à falta de investimento em logística de transporte e armazenamento. Aliado a isso, para garantir um desenvolvimento sustentável é necessário refletir também sobre o uso consciente dos recursos naturais disponíveis. O objetivo desta revisão narrativa de literatura é discutir o direito humano à alimentação adequada e o desperdício de produtos alimentícios. Os resultados evidenciam elevados índices de desperdício, em virtude das condições inadequadas de transporte e manuseio.
