Nutritive value of multienzyme supplemented cold-pressed camelina cake for pigs

Abstract: Cold-pressed camelina cake (CPCC) is a fibrous co-product of camelina seed pressing and available for livestock feeding. However, information is lacking on the effect of supplementing fiber-degrading enzymes to CPCC-based diets on nutrient utilization by pigs. Experiment 1 determined the effect of multienzyme supplementation on standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acid (AA) and net energy (NE) value of CPCC for pigs. Six ileal-cannulated barrows (average initial body weight [BW] = 36 kg) were fed fi… Show more

“…HSC and LSC had the highest average SID of EAA, 87.8 and 85.1%, respectively [18]. According to Woyengo et al [23], the average SID of EAA for CSC (54.8%) was close to the average value (57.9%) reported by Kahindi et al [47]. In contrast, higher values of SID of EAA were observed by Almeida et al [37] for CSC (68.6-77.7%).…”

“…Apparently, the application of the heat to the barrel during oil extraction led to an increase in TTAD of energy due to the rise in lipid solubility, which might affect improvement in energy digestibility of pressed cake [16]. The TTAD-GE for CSC ranged between 72.4 and 82.0% [23,29,47]. The net energy (NE) and digestible energy (DE) for CSC were noted to be in the range of 9.3-10.7 MJ/kg and 15.3-17.5 MJ/kg, respectively [23,29,47], while NE and DE for RSC were reported to be 8.6-11.9 MJ/kg and 13.2-16.5 MJ/kg, respectively [10,16].…”

“…Thus, the limited effect of phytase and multicarbohydrase supplementation on AID of GE could be attributed to the lack of effect of the enzyme supplementation on ileal digestibility of AA. Similarly, supplementation of cold-pressed soybean cake ( Woyengo et al, 2016 ) or cold-pressed camelina cake ( Woyengo et al, 2018 ) with multienzyme did not affect AID of GE in pigs. Supplementation of carinata meal with phytase and multicarbohydrase improved the ATTD of GE, which was due to numerical increase in AID of GE and AHD of GE by the enzyme supplementation.…”

“…The negative effects of fiber and phytate in carinata meal can potentially be alleviated by supplementing fiber-degrading enzymes and phytase, respectively. Supplemental fiber-degrading enzymes have been shown to improve the nutritional value of various Brassica co-products including canola meal ( Zijlstra et al, 2010 ), rapeseed meal ( Fang et al, 2007 ), and camelina cake ( Woyengo et al, 2018 ).…”
