Nutritional value of some raw materials for guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) feeding

Abstract: To formulate economically viable foods and achieve high performance in guinea pig production it is important to know the nutritional value of the feeds, which requires determining their chemical composition, availability of nutrients, and energy content. Chemical analysis, digestibility tests, and digestible (DE) and metabolizable (ME) energy content of 63 feeds were determined using male guinea pigs of 4-5 months of age. The test feeds were fodder, agricultural residues, agro-industrial and kitchen waste, ene… Show more

“…Guinea pigs have a wide capacity to utilize different types of food, they make good use of all types of food, from food rich in ber to food rich in protein; even though ber has a lower nutritional value, guinea pigs make better use of it than other monogastric animals by having a functional caecum, generating a lower utilization of nutrients and metabolizable energy, likewise, the protein contribution contributes to the higher utilization of energy, even concentrates and other supplements improve their nutritional contribution when they are included in the diet [4,6,9], seeking to insert and meet the requirements that the market demands, standard guinea pigs of size and quality [10]. In this way, guinea pigs with better live weights could be obtained by feeding alfalfa supplemented with balanced feed, as happened in the present research work.…”

“…Due to its high fibre content, it may only be suitable as feed for animals able to handle a high fraction of fibres in their feed. Furthermore, a high fibre content may hinder the digestion of the other compounds [113]. Additionally, to the composition shown in Table 5, pods contain compounds such as phenolic compounds which can exhibit among others antimicrobial and radical scavenging effects [99].…”
