Aim This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to characterize the nutritional status of geriatric rehabilitation patients and its association with functional parameters. Findings Malnutrition is prevalent in a relevant percentage of geriatric rehabilitation patients, whereas body mass index (BMI) is in the normal to overweight range. Furthermore, data suggest that protein and energy intake is reduced and vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in this population. Decreased physical function is associated with malnutrition according to Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and MNA short form, whereas BMI did not show any clear association. Message Nutritional status is reduced in a relevant percentage of geriatric rehabilitation patients and associated with decreased physical function which emphasizes the need for screening and targeted interventions.

Nutritional status is relevant to functional recovery in patients after an acute process requiring rehabilitation. Nevertheless, little is known about the impact of malnutrition on geriatric rehabilitation. This study aimed to determine the association between nutritional status at admission and the evolution of functional and physical outcomes, as well as the capability of nutritional status to identify fallers among patients admitted to geriatric rehabilitation for different reasons. This was a retrospective cohort study of 375 patients. Data collected included age, gender, diagnosis at admission, comorbidities, cognitive and nutritional status, functional and physical measurements, length of stay, mortality and falls. Orthogeriatric patients with worse nutritional status according to the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) had a significantly lower Barthel Index at admission and discharge with worse functional gain and poorer outcomes in the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). However, in hospital-deconditioned patients, the MNA-SF score was not significantly associated with functional and physical recovery. Poor nutritional status at admission increased the risk of experiencing at least one fall during rehabilitation in orthogeriatric patients. However, hospital-deconditioned patients who fell had better SPPB scores than those who did not fall. Our results demonstrate the importance of nutritional status in the clinical evolution of orthogeriatric patients throughout the rehabilitation process.

Aims The decline of nutritional status and depressive symptoms are pandemic in heart failure patients and functional status may play a pivotal role between these. This study aimed to determine whether nutritional status is associated with depressive symptoms and whether functional status mediates this relationship in heart failure patients. Design This was a secondary analysis of a cross‐sectional study. Methods The data were collected from November 2015–April 2016. Heart failure patients (N = 254) being hospitalized were included in this secondary analysis. The Depression Sub‐Scale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Duke Activity Status Index were used to assess patients' depressive symptoms and functional status. The nutritional status of patients was calculated using the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index. Results In this study, the average scores of depressive symptoms, nutritional status and functional status were 4.91 (SD 3.12), 102.38 (SD 6.57) and 20.58 (SD 8.96) respectively. Out of the 254 patients, 46 patients (18.1%) had significant depressive symptoms (the score of Depression Sub‐Scale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale ≥ 8) and 55 (21.7%) suffered from malnutrition (the score of Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index ≤ 98). In the multiple regression analyses, nutritional status was negatively associated with depressive symptoms (β = −0.142, p = .02) and functional status mediated the relationship between nutritional status and depressive symptoms. Conclusions Many patients with heart failure have malnutrition and depressive symptoms. Functional status plays a mediating role in the relationship between nutritional status and depressive symptoms. Impact To relieve depressive symptoms in patients with heart failure, it is of importance to improve the functional status, especially for those with poor nutritional status.
