Nutritional Status After Intestinal Transplantation in Children

Abstract: There was a significant improvement in weight Z-score and biochemical nutritional parameters 1 year after receiving a small bowel graft. No influence of steroids or catheter-related sepsis on children's nutritional status was noted 1 year after surgery, although this point will need further evaluation.

“…We have reported that, in our patients, hyperphagia often compensated for suboptimal energy absorption and steatorrhoea, thus resulting in normal growth (13). Few studies have described the capacity of absorption of the allograft (14)(15)(16)(17)(18). Our aim here was to analyze more precisely the net intestinal absorption rates in children early after ITx at the time of PN weaning.…”

“…Important deficiencies are seen before transplantation in serum albumin and prealbumin levels in patients with intestinal failure, and these deficiencies improve significantly after intestinal transplantation. Nutritional parameters in blood were evaluated as markers of graft function . Mostly normal prealbumin and normal albumin and vitamin B12 levels suggested a generally efficient absorption.…”
