Nutritional potential of a novel sea asparagus, Salicornia neei Lag., for human and animal diets

“…Salicornia bigelovii, known as dwarf glasswort, is a succulent halophytic (salt tolerant) plant proves to be a potential candidate to grow in salt marshes and intertidal areas on coasts of many countries (Loconsole et al, 2019) and can be irrigated with seawater (Glenn et al, 1998;Ventura and Sagi, 2013). There is an increasing concern about the use of S. bigelovii in human and animal diet as well as in biofuel production worldwide (Bañuelos et al, 2018;Doncato and Costa, 2018). In the UAE, the cultivation of S. bigelovii has become profitable.…”

This succulent plant is used for human consumption and animal feed (Belal and Al-Dosari, 1999; Doncato and Costa, 2018); and its oilseeds are potential source for biofuel and biodiesel production (Bailis and Yu, 2012; Abideen et al, 2015). Thus, Salicornia spp.…”

“…Moreover, it contains a considerable amount of dietary fiber (30.27% neutral detergent fibers and 13.16% acid detergent fibers on dry weight basis), which is known to be important for bowel health (Durant et al., 2006). With the values obtained from the proximate analysis, calculated daily consumption of 20 g of Salicornia dry shoots would partially supply the recommended daily intake of several mineral elements including Fe (48%), Mg (33%), Ca (14%), P (9%), and K (8%) and 100% supply of required daily Mn amount for an adult (Doncato & Costa, 2018).…”
